The Common Dolphin

My favorite sea animal is the dolphin.  It is one of the smartest sea animals in the ocean.  This is why it is my favorite.  They are related to the whales and porpoises. They vary in size from between 4 ft. to 30 ft.  They are carnivorous usually eating fish and squid. When they are sited by humans they are very often nice and they play around with each other.  They are very social and this has made humans like them very much.  They live in groups called pods and sometimes those pods gather together where there is a lot of food.  When this happens there can be up to a thousand dolphins.  Dolphins have been seen using tools also.  They have been seen breaking off sponges from the ocean floor and putting them on their snouts to avoid being scratched  while searching for food.  They are such intelligent animals and that is why they are my favorite.

The Sea Horses 

My favorite sea animal is the Sea Horse.  I like the sea horse mostly because it is very cute and tiny.  I also like the sea horse because it is an amazing little creature. They are usually found in sheltered areas such as sea grass beds or coral reefs. They bob around these areas where they are camouflaged by murky brown and grey patterns that blend into the sea grass backgrounds. Sometimes when they are in social surroundings they will turn bright colors to attract other sea horses. The most interesting part about sea horses is that the males give birth to the young through a pouch that he has.  This makes the Sea Horse the coolest sea animal in the ocean.

Great White Sharks

My favorite sea animal is the Great White Shark.  The great white shark lives in offshore and coastal waters. It stays near the surface of the water at temperatures of about 54 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit.  It lives in waters rich with its favorite food such as fur seals, sea lions, other sharks, and bony fish. The shark usually grows between 13 to 16 feet in length and can weigh typically 1500 to 2450 pounds. The largest specimen of this shark was found in cuban waters and was measured at about 21 ft. and approximately 7200 pounds. The size of these sea creatures is what makes the Great White my favorite sea animal.

         My favorite sea animal is the Octopus. The octopus has eight arms that have suction cups attached to them. An octopus is also called a cephalopod. Octopi often live in a coral reef. Octopi don't live for very long.  Some of the smaller species live up to as little as six months. I really like the octopus because it has three hearts.  This is very strange and it makes the octopus very cool in my opinion. Octopi are very intelligent as well.  They have been observed throwing floating bottles into the path of bubbles in their aquariums and then catching them as they bounce back.  They also have been seen breaking into holds in order to get clams to eat or even making their way into ships to find food.  They are a very interesting creature and that is why they are my favorite.

What is a Pinniped?

Pinnipeds are a specific scientific group of ocean dwelling animals. Thier name means "feather foot" or "wing foot." Still don't know what a Pinniped is? Have you ever seen a Sea Lion, Seal, or a Walrus? These three ocean animals are all considered Pinnipeds. These creatures all spend a great deal of their lives in the ocean searching for food. They have flippers on each of their feet for graceful swimming and a very thick layer of blubber to keep them warm in the cold waters of the ocean.

My Favorite Ocean Animal Is The Sea Lions

These sea animals like to eat fish...Lots of Fish! Their is generally one dominant male, also called a bull, watching over all of the female sea lions called cows. These creatures all live in a harem together or a family group and they protect each other from the harsh ocean life. Sometimes several Harems gather together and live in the same area. This is called a colony. Sea lions are very smart little creatures. They have a very interesting way of making their way around in the depths of the dark ocean. Their wiskers help them to navagate down deep in the water where it can be dark. Their whiskers can rotate around under water feeling around for any food that is swimming by which they will then swallow whole. These smart little creatures are my favorite not only for their clever food finding techniques and family life style but also because they are so cute!!
